Originally conceived as an exclusive district for the wealthy, Travis Heights was first developed in the late 19th century, but didn’t really take off until the 1920s. Now, with a great mix of mansions, smaller homes, and hip apartments, Travis Heights is among the most desirable residential neighborhoods in Austin. Proximity to South Congress, Downtown, and the major freeways also make Travis Heights one of the best-positioned areas in Central Austin.

What to do

It’s all about relaxing in Travis Heights. On a warm afternoon, there’s nothing better than taking a trip to one of the neighborhood’s parks, Big and Little Stacy, which have beautiful wooded areas, jogging and cycling trails, and tennis courts. There’s also Norwood Estate Park, a dog-friendly area that’s a popular spot on the weekends.

There are some great local businesses on the southern edge of the Heights. Curra’s Grill serves up outstanding Mexican food and drinks, and just around the corner at Treehouse Italian Grill, you can find some outstanding classic italian, a great wine list, and one of Austin’s best patios.

But proximity to fun is what makes Travis Heights such a great spot. Residents can head to Downtown or to SoCo just a few blocks away to grab a drink, have dinner, or see live music, and then retreat to their quiet neighborhood for some restful recovery.
