West Campus Sweet Sixteen
A Quick West Campus History Lesson
The demands for on-campus housing at The University of Texas at Austin have transformed West Campus. An area once dominated by single-family homes has evolved, and is now filled with small and large scale multi-family projects, large apartment complexes, and condominiums.
This evolution encouraged the City of Austin to pass the University Neighborhood Overlay Plan (UNO) with the objective of making West Campus a dense, vibrant, mixed-use, pedestrian-oriented community. The City of Austin feels that:
"Promoting a greater density at the city center is one way of reducing sprawl at the city periphery; considered by any to be one of the greatest threats to environmental health and to our livelihood."
Since the UNO Plan was passed in 2004, the face of West Campus has continued to change rapidly. With UT Austin growing each year, and more and more students trying to live near campus, the results are staggering: over 10,000 new bedrooms will be completed by 2011.
The Sweet Sixteen
Many people ask - why Sweet Sixteen? Well consider this: you get your driver's license at sixteen, you can legally work at the age of sixteen, and for girls, this translates into society recognizing a girls journey from childhood to maturity with a celebration known as a Sweet Sixteen. In essence, it's the number that represents the "coming of age."
With West Campus experiencing developmental milestones, we were inspired to honor this significant time in history by having the West Campus Girls represent this coming of age. These girls are the ambassadors of the West Campus Life Saver Program, who's mission is to make a difference in the lives of the children at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
We've found the first eight girls who are all about spreading the word of the West Campus Life Savers Program, and are are looking for the next eight. If you're interested in being a part of spreading the word, click here to apply!
