Bryker Woods/Old Enfield

Classic Old-Austin Style

Overview

Bryker Woods/Old Enfield is among central Austin's oldest neighborhoods, and is composed primarily of stylish, single-family homes. With one of Austin's best elementary schools, park & greenbelt access, well-built homes, and a vibrant local community, this neighborhood has plenty to offer, and is conveniently located between north and south Austin. A diverse mix of homes both old a new are situation on large lots with ample setbacks, ensuring privacy but contributing to a connected community of neighbors and friends.

Historic bridges over Shoal Creek connect the neighborhood to UT Austin and the central business district. The neighborhood itself is quite dense, and there are few large open areas, but mature trees make for beautiful shaded streets, and ample hike and bike trails and easy access to Pease Park and Bailey Park ensure there are plenty of places to get outdoors. Increased development and large-scale remodeling have brought significant changes to this neighborhood, and residents have fought to keep the size of homes reasonable and ensure that developers are complying to the zoning ordinances set out by the city. A strong, active neighborhood association, the BWNA, advocates for the neighborhood and protects its long history as one of Austin's most respected residential neighborhoods.

What to do

One of the most appealing things about this neighborhood are its outstanding parks. Shoal Creek Park, situated along Shoal Creek just south of 34th Street, features Zeriscaped gardens, a covered picnic pavilion, and access to the Shoal Creek Hike and Bike Trail. During the school year, you can find children from the nearby elementary school playing with family and friends. Also check out Bailey Park, between Seton Hospital and the St. Andrews School. The outdoor tennis courts, sand volleyball, and a children's wading pool make this a fun place to spend an afternoon.

At the northern end of the neighborhood, check out the Jefferson Square Shopping Center for specialty stores and dining. Capra and Cavelli, recently named one of the top 100 clothing stores in Esquire Magazine, offers impeccable clothing for men and women, with off-the-rack designer pieces as well as custom tailoring. Just around the corner, Things Celtic features fine Celtic art by artists from Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, and is the only place in Austin to purchase a "Utilikilt."

For one of Austin's best burgers, check out Hilbert's Hamburgers, an Austin landmark that now has locations all over town. Their Lamar Boulevard location just south of 35th Street is the original, and has been serving their famous burgers for over 30 years. For some delicious upscale dining, 34th Street Café is a must. For owner Eddie Bernal, it's all about the food, and it shows. It's a great place to take a date or some friends for dinner, or stop by for a quick weekday lunch if you're in a hurry; either way, the food is unbelievable.
