Tarrytown
Understated Elegance in Central AustinOverview
One of Austin's most revered and exclusive neighborhoods, Tarrytown is bounded by 35th Street, MoPac, and Lake Austin Boulevard. Remarkably sophisticated but unassuming, this neighborhood is home mostly to families and professionals The homes are mostly small bungalows, but several small apartment complexes and condo-conversions have begun to spring up.
Tarrytown is always associated with the area on its southern border on Lake Austin Boulevard, where many local business rely on Tarrytown residents as their primary clientele. In addition to this central commercial area, there's also the Exposition Drive center, which features chain stores as well as local businesses and one of Austin's best schools, Casis Elementary.
Tarrytown caught the eye of the national media when Jeanne Daniels, a Houston, Texas resident and animal rights activist, inherited the shopping center and decided to eliminate any stores that sold meat or leather. This brought serious changes to the area as many local favorites went out of business, and engendered some seriously angry responses from locals. For example, the former Holiday House (who served awesome burgers) is now Nu Age Café, which features an all-vegetarian menu.
What to do
Head south to Zoot on Hearn Street, just north of Lake Austin Boulevard, and enjoy five-star dining in a converted bungalow. For Mexican food, check out Hula Hut, right on the water on Lake Austin, or Maudie's, a local favorite for its awesome margaritas. Just down the road on Lake Austin is Magnolia Café, an undeniable Austin institution, which serves up vegetarian and Mexican food, breakfast, and sandwiches 24/7.
Another popular hangout is Mozart's, a great place to take a date. The huge outdoor patio is right on the water, the desserts are to die for, and the coffee is locally roasted and delicious.
Tarrytown proper isn't home to a large number of businesses, but its proximity to downtown is excellent, and just down either 35th street or Enfield there are numerous restaurants, shops, and more. What Tarrytown may lack in commercial appeal, it makes up for in natural beauty. Check out Mayfield Park and Nature Preserve, a 22-acre, turn-of-the-century park on Tarrytown's western edge, with beautiful ponds and gardens, nature trails, a historic clubhouse, and get even peacocks. Right next door is Laguna Gloria, now part of the Austin Museum of Art, which is a mansion built in 1915 that features art classes, exhibitions, and more.
In the heart of the neighborhood, there's also Reed Park, where locals love to swim, run, bike, or just relax. Tarrytown is also home to another of Austin's excellent municipal golf courses, Lions Municipal. Another popular outdoor spot is Deep Eddy Pool in Eilers Park, a neighborhood meeting place for swimmers from February to October, and the home of movie nights during the summertime, in which the City of Austin shows movies by the pool.
