Westlake Hills
Beautiful Residential Neighborhood That Makes Its Own RulesOverview
Westlake Hills isn't technically part of Austin proper, with its own government and school district (Eanes ISD), but that doesn't stop it from being an integral part of the West Austin landscape. Blending seamlessly into the metro area between Loop 1 and Capital of Texas Highway, Westlake offers amazing views of the hill country to the west and the Downtown to the east. It's all about style and sophistication here, with high-end homes, large tree-covered lots, and beautiful rolling hills. Westlake city ordinances keep down excessive signs, advertising, and high-rises. Even though it isn't Austin, Westlake is still considered among its most desirable and prestigious areas.
The Westlake Hills city limits begin a few blocks west of Loop 1, which means that the larger apartment complexes visible from the western bank of Loop 1 (and also just south of Bee Cave Road) are within the Austin city limits. But Westlake definitely has the feel or an independent community, and these boundaries are really important in name only – travel just a bit further west to see scaled-down versions and single-family homes, as well as local businesses.
What to do
Bee Cave Road, the main artery through the neighborhood, is lined with shopping centers. Though some are large and corporate, with chain stores and an HEB, most exemplify the spirit of the neighborhood: cleverly designed and working around the city's strict sign ordinances. The best local spots here have the low-key vibe you would expect from Austin. Check out the neighborhood favorite restaurant Las Palomas for excellent interior Mexican, or The Grove wine bar and restaurant for an upscale romantic evening. Other hot dining spots include Bistro 88, with its contemporary and eclectic pan-Asian menu, and Wildwood Art Cafe, which features Oaxacan art as well as a gluten-free menu.
Westlake is also a great place to head outdoors, whether it's driving down to nearby Zilker Park to spend a day at the Botanical Gardens, or heading over the western edge at Capital of Texas Highway to check out the Wild Basin Nature Preserve. This beautiful 277-acre preserve is absolutely pristine, and features countless nature trails as well as
self-guided tours daily. This neighborhood is also home to one of Austin's most popular outdoor areas, the Barton Creek Greenbelt, which is located on Capital of Texas Highway across from Barton Creek Mall. Take the afternoon to just kick back and enjoy the sun with a few friends – you won't regret it.
Though you may not think of a hardware store as an attraction, two of Austin's best are located on Bee Cave Road in Westlake: Cornerstone and Breed & Co. You'll find far more than basic tools here, with cooking supplies, china, home decor, art, and gifts; Breed & Co. in particular is a great place to go for gift ideas around the holidays.
Why live here?
Let's face it: not everyone can afford to live in Westlake Hills. But if you've got deep pockets, and the idea of living in your own city-within-a-city is appealing, check out this neighborhood. This neighborhood is ideal for families, with some of the most prestigious schools in Texas.
